The Unsaid

2017

Within nations with traumatic histories, silence often displaces personal vicissitudes of the citizens for the purpose of building a collective consciousness. Silence functions as a framework within which repression functions. The conflict between the said and the unsaid often reveals the clash between repressed history and the desire to convey. According to the French philosopher Michael Foucault, silence is not the absence of voice but the inability to be heard. It is the desire to recover what has been silenced, to restore lost or unknown knowledge that propels the narrative forward. Given that my work spans a broad range of media – drawing, sculpture, photography, video and installation my explores the non-representable – silence and the unsaid within the historical and contemporary narratives in India.
